HYDIS² consortium project for hypersonic defence interceptor proposed for funding by the European Commission
In May 2023, the HYDIS² consortium, composed of 19 partners and more than 20 subcontractors across 14 European countries, submitted a proposal for a concept architecture and technology maturation study of an endo-atmospheric interceptor against new high-end emerging threats, in the framework of the European Defence Fund 2023 work programme. On the 12th of July 2023, following a positive evaluation, the European Commission proposed the project for funding.
The consortium, coordinated by MBDA, proposed HYDIS² (HYpersonic Defence Interceptor Study), a project that brings together Defence groups, institutions, SMEs, mid-caps and universities. It gathers the best competences in the domains of missiles from across the European Union. France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands have already confirmed their support and commitment by signing a Letter of Intent and agreeing on Initial Common Requirements.
The objective of HYDIS² is to study various interceptor concepts and bring to maturity the associated critical technologies to deliver the best counter-hypersonic and anti-ballistic interception solution that fulfils the four Member States needs and addresses the needs of the European PESCO TWISTER capability programme. This is a central element of the contribution of European states to the mission of defence of populations and armed forces, in particular against the emerging hypersonic threats that constitute a radical change from ballistic ones.
The HYDIS² consortium brings together 19 partners and more than 20 subcontractors in 14 European countries. HYDIS² contributes to the AQUILA interceptor project, proposing the most valuable counter-hypersonic interceptor concepts for European nations, alongside a global area defence portfolio with other MBDA air defence products.
En Mai 2023, le consortium HYDIS, réunissant 19 partenaires et plus de 20 sous-traitants au travers 14 pays européens, a remis une étude de concept d’architecture et de maturation de la technologie pour un intercepteur endo-atmosphérique capable de contrer les nouvelles menaces émergentes très sophistiquées, dans le cadre du Fonds Européen de Défense 2023. Le 12 juillet 2023, la Commission Européenne a annoncé qu’elle avait sélectionné le projet pour financement.
Le consortium, dont MBDA assure la coordination, a proposé HYDIS² (HYpersonic Defence Interceptor Study), un projet rassemblant des groupes de défense, des institutions, des PME, des ETI et des universités. Le consortium regroupe les meilleures compétences de toute l’Union européenne en matière de missiles. La France, l’Allemagne, l’Italie et les Pays-Bas ont d’ores et déjà confirmé leur support et leur implication en signant une Lettre d’Intention et en s’accordant sur les exigences communes initiales.
L’objectif pour HYDIS2 est d’étudier différents concepts d’intercepteurs et de porter à maturation les technologies critiques associées, afin de fournir la meilleure solution d’interception anti-hypersonique et anti-ballistique pour répondre aux besoins des 4 Etats membres (la France, l’Italie, l’Allemagne et les Pays-Bas), tout en tenant compte du programme capacitaire européen TWISTER. Le projet est un élément central de la contribution des Etats européens à la mission de défense des populations et des forces armées, en particulier contre les menaces hypersoniques émergentes qui constituent un changement radical par rapport aux menaces balistiques.

HYDIS² contribue au projet AQUILA, qui propose des concepts d’intercepteur contre-hypersoniques pour un certain nombre de pays européens, parallèlement au développement d’un portefeuille global de produits de défense de zone avec d’autres produits antiaériens de MBDA.
A maggio 2023, il consorzio HYDIS, costituito da 19 partner e da oltre 20 subfornitori provenienti da 14 Paesi europei, ha presentato una proposta per uno studio di concetti di architettura e di maturazione tecnologica di un intercettore endo-atmosferico contro le nuove minacce emergenti di fascia alta, nell’ambito dei programmi di lavoro 2023 del Fondo Europeo per la Difesa (EDF-European Defence Fund). Il 12 luglio 2023, a seguito di una valutazione positiva, la Commissione Europea ha proposto il progetto per un finanziamento.
Il consorzio, coordinato da MBDA, ha proposto HYDIS² (HYpersonic Defence Interceptor Study), un progetto che riunisce gruppi nel settore della difesa, istituzioni, PMI, Mid-Cap e Università, raccogliendo le migliori competenze nel campo della missilistica attraverso tutta l’Unione Europea. Francia, Germania, Italia e Paesi Bassi hanno già confermato il loro supporto e impegno firmando una Lettera di Intenti e concordando i Requisiti Iniziali Comuni.
L’obiettivo di HYDIS² consiste nello studio di vari concetti di intercettore e nel portare a maturazione le tecnologie critiche associate per offrire la migliore soluzione contro le minacce ipersoniche e balistiche, che soddisfi le esigenze dei quattro Stati membri, e che risponda alle necessità del programma europeo di capacità TWISTER della cooperazione strutturata permanente (PESCO).
Tale iniziativa rappresenta un elemento centrale del contributo degli Stati europei alla missione di difesa di popolazioni e Forze Armate, in particolare contro le minacce ipersoniche emergenti che costituiscono un cambiamento radicale rispetto a quelle balistiche.
