Concept Visions 2012 – CVS 301 VIGILUS
At the 2012 Farnborough International Airshow, MBDA is unveiling an innovative concept weapon system for 2030, CVS301 VIGILUS.
VIGILUS is a suite of future strike weapons for UAVs that provides a revolutionary close air support capability to battlefield UAVs. Allowing the UAV to remain at a safe stand-off distance, VIGILUS offers a flexible targeting and strike capability against multiple time critical targets that can be directly controlled by ground troops.
VIGILUS delivers persistent, proportional, precise and rapid effects that are beyond today’s capability and deployed technology, exploiting new technologies and novel designs. The VIGILUS weapon system comprises an integrated launcher and communications unit, a scout missile, a family of effectors and an integrated weapon command system that together deliver greater situational awareness as well as proportional and rapid engagement of time critical targets. VIGILUS gives the operator permanent real time visual contact with the target, an operational advantage provided by the scout missile, known as Caelus. Caelus can operate at low altitudes below the cloud base, providing accurate and precise targeting data when adverse weather conditions would limit target engagement directly by UAVs.
The VIGILUS weapon system has a flexible and adaptable command system. It can be co-ordinated directly by ground troops, giving them the ability to engage multiple, beyond line of sight targets in both urban and open areas. It can also be controlled by a weapon system operator located in the UAV ground control station.

CVS301 VIGILUS is the latest output from MBDA’s high profile Concept Visions project that has established the company’s leadership for envisaging how innovation in missile systems could dominate the future battlefield. Now in its third year, Concept Visions is a company-wide initiative aimed at identifying the key technologies and their integration into a weapon system to shape the future defence market in key domains beyond 2030.
MBDA’s European workforce was challenged to provide concepts and technologies for weapon systems that could be integrated into future Unmanned Air Systems. Following assessment by an international panel, the winning concepts and technologies became the subject of intense workshops, utilising not only the technical expertise within MBDA, but also reaching out to UAV platform providers as well as current UAV users. Through a rapid and iterative process, the international Concept Visions team has created the CVS301 VIGILUS weapon system.

Le VIGILUS est un ensemble d’armes de frappe futures pour drones. Il est conçu pour doter les drones du champ de bataille d’une capacité d’appui aérien rapproché révolutionnaire. Tout en maintenant le drone à distance de sécurité, le système VIGILUS apporte en effet une capacité de désignation d’objectif et de frappe contre des cibles multiples à fenêtre d’engagement critique, que les troupes au sol peuvent commander directement.
Grâce à de nouvelles technologies, et par sa conception innovante, le VIGILUS garantit des effets persistants, proportionnés, précis et rapides, supérieurs aux capacités et aux technologies opérationnelles d’aujourd’hui. Le système d’armes VIGILUS se compose d’un ensemble intégré lanceur et interface de communication, un missile « éclaireur », une famille de missiles effecteurs ainsi qu’un système de commande d’armement intégré. Ensemble, ces équipements offrent une tenue de situation tactique largement améliorée et des capacités d’engagement rapides et adaptées contre les cibles à fenêtre d’engagement critique. Le VIGILUS permet à l’opérateur de maintenir en temps réel un contact visuel permanent avec la cible – un avantage opérationnel rendu possible grâce au missile de reconnaissance Caelus. Le Caelus est capable d’évoluer à basse altitude, sous la couverture nuageuse, pour fournir des informations de désignation d’objectif très fines et précises, là où les conditions météorologiques limitent sévèrement la capacité des drones à engager directement la cible.
Le système d’armes VIGILUS est doté d’un système de commande flexible et adaptable. Il peut être coordonné directement par les combattants au sol, qui disposent grâce à lui des moyens d’engager des objectifs multiples au-delà de la portée visuelle, aussi bien en zone urbaine qu’en zone découverte. Le système peut aussi être commandé par un opérateur de système d’armes depuis la station sol de contrôle et de communication du drone.

Le système VIGILUS CVS301 est le dernier-né du prestigieux projet Concept Visions à travers lequel MBDA démontre comment l’innovation, appliquée aux systèmes de missiles, pourrait garantir la domination du champ de bataille futur. A présent dans sa troisième année, le projet Concept Visions est une initiative qui implique l’ensemble de l’entreprise en vue d’identifier les principales technologies et la façon de les intégrer à un système d’armes, pour façonner ensuite certains secteurs clés du marché de la défense futur, au-delà de 2030.
Les collaborateurs de MBDA à travers l’Europe ont été mis à contribution pour proposer des concepts et des technologies pour systèmes d’armes qui puissent être intégrés aux futurs systèmes aériens sans pilote (UAS). Après un travail d’évaluation effectué par un panel international, les concepts et technologies retenus ont fait l’objet d’ateliers particulièrement productifs, pour lesquels MBDA a mobilisé toutes ses compétences techniques et sollicité le concours des fournisseurs de plates-formes de drone et des utilisateurs actuels eux-mêmes. C’est à travers ce processus itératif rapide que l’équipe internationale Concept Visions est parvenue à élaborer et réaliser le système d’armes VIGILUS CVS301.

VIGILUS ist ein zukünftiges Waffensystem, das UAVs bei Kampfeinsätzen eine revolutionäre Fähigkeit zur Luftnahunterstützung verleiht. Indem VIGILUS es dem UAV ermöglicht, in sicherem Abstand zu bleiben, bietet es eine flexible Targeting- und Strike-Fähigkeit zur Bekämpfung mehrerer zeitkritischer Ziele, die direkt von Bodentruppen gesteuert werden kann.
VIGILUS ermöglicht eine angemessene, präzise und schnelle Wirkung über einen langen Zeitraum, die mit heutigen Mitteln nicht möglich ist, indem neue Technologien und neuartige Designs zum Einsatz kommen.
Das VIGILUS Waffensystem besteht aus einer integrierten Launcher- und Kommunikationseinheit, einem Aufklärungsflugkörper, einer Effektor-Familie und einem integrierten Waffensteuerungssystem. Zusammen verbessern diese Elemente die Situational Awareness und ermöglichen eine angemessene und schnelle Bekämpfung zeitkritischer Ziele.
VIGILUS ermöglicht dem Bediener permanenten Sichtkontakt mit dem Ziel in Echtzeit. Der Aufklärungsflugkörper Caelus, der diesen operationellen Vorteil bietet, kann in geringer Höhe unterhalb der Wolken eingesetzt werden, wodurch akkurate und präzise Zieldaten bereitgestellt werden, wenn ungünstige Wetterbedingungen die direkte Zielbekämpfung durch UAVs begrenzen.
Das VIGILUS Waffensystem besitzt ein flexibles und anpassbares Steuerungssystem. Es kann direkt von Bodentruppen koordiniert werden, so dass mehrere Ziele außerhalb der Sichtlinie in urbanem und offenem Gelände bekämpft werden können. Es kann aber auch von einem Bediener in der UAV-Bodenleitstelle gesteuert werden.

CVS301 VIGILUS ist das jüngste Ergebnis des herausragenden Concept Vision Projekts von MBDA, mit dem sich das Unternehmen bei der Erforschung der Rolle von innovativen Flugkörpersystemen für die Kampfeinsätze von morgen eine Führungsposition erworben hat. Concept Visions, welches sich jetzt in seinem dritten Jahr befindet, ist eine unternehmensweite Initiative mit dem Ziel, Schlüsseltechnologien und ihre Integration in Waffensysteme über 2030 hinaus zu entwickeln, um Kernbereiche des Verteidigungsmarkts von morgen zu gestalten.
Den Mitarbeitern von MBDA in Europa wurde die Aufgabe gestellt, Konzepte und Technologien für Waffensysteme vorzulegen, die in zukünftige UAS (Unmanned Air Systems) integriert werden können. Im Anschluss an eine Prüfung durch ein internationales Gremium wurden die ausgewählten Konzepte und Technologien im Rahmen von intensiven Workshops bearbeitet, für die nicht nur die technische Expertise von MBDA genutzt wurde, sondern auch die der Hersteller und Nutzer von unbemannten fliegenden Plattformen. Das internationale Concept Visions Team hat das CVS301 VIGILUS Waffensystem in einem schnellen und iterativen Prozess entwickelt.

VIGILUS è una suite di armi di attacco di prossima generazione per sistemi UAV che fornisce una rivoluzionaria funzionalità CAS (Close Air Support) ai velivoli senza pilota impegnati sul campo di battaglia. Consentendo al sistema UAV di rimanere a una distanza di sicurezza appropriata, VIGILUS offre una funzionalità flessibile di puntamento e attacco contro più bersagli “time critical”, che può essere controllata direttamente dalle truppe di terra.
Avvalendosi di nuove tecnologie e design all’avanguardia, VIGILUS fornisce effetti persistenti, proporzionali, precisi e rapidi superiori rispetto a quelli possibili con le funzionalità e la tecnologia attualmente in uso. Il sistema d’arma VIGILUS comprende un lanciatore e un’unità di comunicazione integrati, un missile di ricognizione, una famiglia di attuatori e un sistema d’arma comandato integrato, che insieme forniscono una maggiore consapevolezza situazionale, nonché un attacco proporzionale e rapido di bersagli “time critical”. VIGILUS fornisce all’operatore il contatto visivo permanente in tempo reale del bersaglio, un vantaggio operativo offerto dal missile di ricognizione Caelus. Caelus è in grado di funzionare a bassa quota, al di sotto della base delle nubi, fornendo dati di puntamento estremamente precisi anche in condizioni meteorologiche avverse, che potrebbero limitare l’aggancio del bersaglio direttamente da parte dei sistemi UAV.
Il sistema d’arma VIGILUS, dotato di un sistema di comando flessibile e adattabile, può essere coordinato direttamente dalle truppe di terra, con la possibilità di attaccare più bersagli oltre la portata visiva in aree sia urbane che aperte. Questo sistema può inoltre essere controllato da un operatore situato nella stazione di controllo terrestre del UAV.

CVS301 VIGILUS è l’ultimo prodotto del progetto Concept Visions di alto livello di MBDA, che ha stabilito la leadership dell’azienda per la capacità di prevedere come l’innovazione nel settore dei sistemi missilistici può consentire di superare le sfide belliche del futuro. Concept Visions, al terzo anno di attività, è un’iniziativa sviluppata a livello dell’intera azienda mirata all’identificazione delle tecnologie chiave e alla relativa integrazione in un sistema d’arma allo scopo di dare forma al mercato della difesa del futuro nei domini principali oltre il 2030.
Ai gruppi di lavoro europei di MBDA spettava il difficile compito di fornire idee e tecnologie per lo sviluppo di sistemi d’arma che potessero essere integrati nei velivoli senza pilota di prossima generazione. In seguito alla valutazione condotta da un comitato internazionale, le idee e le tecnologie vincenti sono diventate l’argomento di intensi workshop, che non solo hanno utilizzato le competenze tecniche di MBDA, ma hanno raggiunto anche i fornitori delle piattaforme UAV, oltre che gli utenti di sistemi UAV. Attraverso un processo rapido e iterativo, il team internazionale di Concept Visions ha creato il sistema d’arma CVS301 VIGILUS.
