ASTER Family: Complementary Cutting-Edge Capabilities Ensuring Area Protection

For nearly 35 years, the ASTER missile family has illustrated a successful European industrial cooperation. Developed through a long-standing trilateral partnership between France, Italy and the United Kingdom, ASTER missiles today form the cornerstone of Europe’s naval and land-based air and missile defence programmes. Designed to ensure area protection, the ASTER family addresses the full spectrum of aerial threats, even in a high-intensity context.

The ASTER family comprises ASTER 15 for short to medium-range missions, and ASTER 30 and its evolutions including ASTER 30 B1 and ASTER B1NT for short to long-range interception. These complementary capabilities allow armed forces to rely on a coherent missile family to conduct self-defence operations, ensuring the protection of high-value assets.

ASTER Missiles: Unmatched Performance Against the Full Spectrum of Aerial threats

The ASTER family offers protection against the full spectrum of air threats, including supersonic and subsonic missiles and anti-radiation missiles. Already combat proven, ASTER missiles are also capable of countering combat aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft, UAVs, and helicopters. ASTER 30 B1 adds short-range ballistic missile defence, while ASTER B1NT extends protection to medium-range ballistic, highly manoeuvring and hypersonic threats, making it the only European missile with such capabilities.

ASTER missiles share a similar terminal dart : a lightweight, highly agile interceptor equipped with a high-performance active RF seeker in Ku band, and Ka-band for the ASTER B1NT. This extensive commonality enables operational flexibility while ensuring effectiveness. Thanks to the unique combination of aerodynamic control and direct thrust vector control, known as PIF-PAF, ASTER missiles can perform extremely high-G manoeuvres, delivering unmatched performance.

Vertically launched, ASTER missiles offer 360° coverage, very high speed, up to Mach 4.5, and extremely short reaction-time. With their very quick engagement capability, the ASTER missiles are tailored to cope with saturating attacks and late-detected threats.

A Key Pillar of European Strategic Autonomy

The ASTER programme embodies a success of European cooperation and contributes directly to strengthening the European air defence architecture. Accelerated production, supported by significant industrial investments, has enabled the delivery of the first batches of missiles in record time, therefore enhancing the air defence capabilities of France, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

The development of ASTER B1NT, with first deliveries from 2027, demonstrates the family’s continuous evolution to meet increasingly complex emerging threats. As production ramps up and capabilities expand, ASTER missiles stand as an essential pillar of Europe’s resilience, ensuring sovereign, credible, and sustainable air and missile defence for decades to come.
