About STRATUS
In a context of strategic competition and rapidly evolving battlefields, MBDA is developing the STRATUS programme, which introduces a dual-missile concept designed to deliver operational flexibility and superiority across current and future combat environments.
Two missiles designed for operational superiority
STRATUS will feature a complementary pair of missiles: STRATUS LO (Low Observable) and STRATUS RS (Rapid Strike). Both missiles can either be operated alone, in cooperation with each other, or with other systems, and will be launched both from air and naval platforms.
STRATUS missiles are engineered to fulfil four key missions:
- Deep strike
- Anti-ship
- SEAD/DEAD (Suppression/ Destruction of Enemy Air Defence)
- Anti-HVAA (High-Value Air Asset)
The combination of the two effectors offers the survivability benefits of both high speed and manoeuvrability as well as low observability, ensuring unmatched flexibility and performance in future contested battlespaces. STRATUS will enhance European deep strike and deterrence capabilities by providing air and naval forces with freedom of action and operational superiority, especially in a context of high-intensity conflicts.
To counter increasingly complex A2AD (Anti-Access/Area Denial) strategies, STRATUS explores three complementary penetration strategies:
- High-speed & Manoeuvrability
- Stealthiness
- Saturation
The programme has progressed through a rigorous assessment phase to validate its technical foundations and operational concepts. This phase has been successfully completed, delivering strong results that both validate key technologies and reduce risks ahead of the next development stage. Designed to meet the broad spectrum of deep precision strike requirements for current and future battlefields, STRATUS is poised to be a key asset for collaborative operations across air, sea, and land domains.
An advanced capability, forged through cooperation to tackle current and future threats
Developed jointly by France and the United Kingdom, Stratus is a direct benefit from the long-standing Lancaster House accords, which established a long-term framework for bilateral defence and security cooperation, including the joint development of complex weapon systems. Italy has also recently joined the STRATUS programme.
Building on MBDA’s proven history of cooperations and successes with programmes such as STORM SHADOW/SCALP, METEOR, and ASTER, STRATUS brings together the best of Europe’s expertise and innovation to offer the most technologically advanced and mature response to the need for operational superiority and freedom of action.
Deep strike capabilities are central to this effort, enabling armed forces to operate far beyond the front line, create and exploit gaps in enemy defences, neutralise high-value targets and break tactical deadlocks. STRATUS strikes a critical balance between saturation and penetration, pairing massed fires with highly precise strikes to defeat advanced air defence systems. These multiple capacities position STRATUS as the Europe’s future cruise and anti-ship missile, renewing tactical and operational edge in a more contested and volatile environment.
MBDA’s excellence reinforcing Europe’s strategic sovereignty
The evolution of the contemporary battlefield has underscored the critical importance of achieving an optimal balance between saturation attacks and precision strikes in order to effectively counter increasingly sophisticated air defence systems. As Europe’s leading missile manufacturer, MBDA is spearheading the development of the next-generation deep strike missile, STRATUS, which leverages cutting-edge technologies to ensure mission success and maintain operational superiority.
The rapid advancement of such a diverse portfolio of advanced technologies within a compressed timeframe demands exceptional coordination among partner nations, a testament to the strength and efficiency of MBDA’s cooperative model. By uniting highly skilled and specialised engineers from across Europe and relying on a proven framework of trust and collaboration, STRATUS is set to deliver decisive, high-technology capabilities that safeguard national sovereignty and secure Europe’s defence for the decades to come.
The STRATUS programme is built on years of Research & Development, delivering the right solution at the right time: a powerful conventional weapons system for European defence, and a strategic tool to shift the balance of power on future battlefields and compel an adversary to renounce aggressive action.
