A Strategic Element of next-generation Ground-Based Air Defence Systems

FULGUR is the latest evolution in Very Short-Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) systems. It is a supersonic, fire-and-forget interceptor designed to operate in day and night conditions, and across all climate zones. The VSHORAD solution is equipped with a new-generation electro-optical seeker and advanced image processing capabilities, FULGUR is robust against counter-measures and optimised for force protection missions.

The system is specifically designed to intercept a wide range of aerial threats, including fighter aircraft, helicopters, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), and subsonic cruise missiles. FULGUR’s intercept range is fully compliant with NATO standards for VSHORAD systems, reaching up to 5 km. High mobility and protection of the firing post ensure rapid deployment and survivability, making FULGUR particularly suited for mobile and quick reaction air defence operations.

A VSHORAD Solution delivering Enhanced Agility, Interoperability and Integration

Demonstrating that FULGUR is tailored to meet the armed forces’ operational needs, MBDA has already signed a development contract to equip the Italian Army. Through its agility, manoeuvrability, and interoperability, FULGUR provides significant operational advantages. It is a man-portable ammunition that can be operated both as a shoulder-launched system (MANPADS) and as a vehicle-mounted solution. This hybrid configuration enables flexible employment across a wide variety of operational scenarios.

The system is suitable for paratroops and amphibious forces, while offering a decisive tactical advantage when integrated on military vehicles, thanks to a design fitting both current and future platforms equipped with automated turrets.

Interoperable by design, FULGUR can be integrated into multi-layered ground-based air defence (GBAD) architectures, providing anti-aircraft coverage in blind areas of higher-tier systems. It is fully compatible with SKY WARDEN, MBDA’s counter-UAV system, enabling coverage of the entire spectrum of aerial threats, including drones.

A New Missile completing MBDA’s Multi-layer Portfolio

Leveraging MBDA’s expertise in air defence, FULGUR directly contributes to a European, technologically sovereign very short-range capability. This new missile completes and reinforces MBDA’s multi-layer air defence approach, which addresses the full spectrum of threats, from counter-UAS to complex weapon systems capable of intercepting manoeuvring ballistic missiles, hypersonic gliders as well as solutions ensuring sovereignty in space.
