Strengthening the Defence Ecosystem at Wartime Pace
The rapid evolution of uncrewed systems demands a fundamental shift in how industry develops and delivers capability. Traditional acquisition timelines are incompatible with the speed of operational demand, placing unprecedented importance on agile collaboration between government, prime industry, and Small-Medium-Enterprises (SMEs).
In recognition, MBDA is partnering in new ways to optimise force mix options for our customers. Examples of MBDA’s approach can be symbolised by a strategic MoU signing at Farnborough International Airshow 2026, and its recent second investment in Hybrid Drones Ltd, a UK SME.
MBDA’s collaboration with General Atomics will accelerate the arrival of 6th generation Air Forces. Enduring cooperation built on more than a decade of teaming has enabled the two companies to anticipate the surge of uncrewed systems and begin work ahead of formal requirements to reduce integration timescales.
The partnership vision to optimise lethality and to increase optionality in high-threat density areas through exploration of SPEAR integration to MQ-9B and the Gambit Collaborative Combat Aircraft.
SPEAR provides unrivalled stand-off range, precision and mission flexibility. When combined with Gambit, operators can engage high-value targets while remaining beyond the range of sophisticated Integrated Air Defence Systems (IADS). SPEAR integration could also deliver deep precision strike from MQ-9B SkyGuardian platforms, leveraging the recent key milestone achieved through integration of Brimstone 3 onto the Royal Air Force’s MQ-9B Protector.
