“Smart” warfare

The tempo of the modern battlefield has increased dramatically. To match this tempo, the modern army has to have access to information, be able to decide or react rapidly and achieve more with less. Current thinking therefore, has moved towards the concept of a networked capability and the ability to combine real-time information about the enemy with information about available resources and the optimised deployment of those resources. To support this concept, today’s weapons will need to be connected into a network that ultimately centralises command and control of the greater battlefield. The complete network will encompass not only ground and air-launched battlefield weapons but also the capabilities provided by air and naval forces combining to produce a coordinated response.

MBDA’s weapon systems feature the latest digital technologies to ensure network compatibility. The Company is recognised as a world leader in emerging systems integration thinking at both the complex weapons level and the systems of systems level. It is this recognition that has resulted in MBDA’s selection by the French DGA to contribute to its BOA programme launched in 2004. Similarly, MBDA has also been selected by the UK MoD to lead its complex weapons initiative aimed towards maintaining the country’s sovereign capabilities in future defence sector technologies.
